missing dialogue normalization feature in NS-2BRDVD/NS-BDLIVE01?

Hi, the NS-2BRDVD player with a pre-June firmware had a dialogue normalization feature to equalize the dialogue volume in a Dolby soundtrack. However, this feature is missing in the audio setup menu if the player is flashed with the latest June firmware. The NS-BDLIVE01 is also missing this feature. Was there a reason why this feature was removed? Will it be added back in a future firmware update?

Mine has a "Dynamic Range Control" under audio, which does the same thing.  Maybe they just renamed the feature.  It actually works relatively well for a humble apartment dweller.

Actually, "Dynamic Range Control" and "Dialogue Normalization" are two different features. If you look in the original user manual of the NS-2BRDVD, it lists these as different features.

For Dynamic Range Control: "Select this option if you play movies at low volume or if you have small speakers. Your player using compression to make low-audio content easier to hear and prevent high-audio content from getting to loud."

For Dialogue Normalization: "A Dolby soundtrack has a piece of non-audio data so that the dialogue in all movies plays at about the same volume level."

Can someone from Insignia respond to this? Why would the latest June firmware update remove a feature?

You're right, I found dialogue normalization in the manual for the 2BRDVD, that option does not exist on the BDLIVE01.  This would be a nice feature, especialy in movies that have moments of especially quiet dialogue interspersed with noisy sound effects.

Re: missing dialogue normalization feature in NS-2BRDVD/NS-BDLIVE01?

Hi everyone,

When performing the latest firmware update on the NS-2BRDVD the dialogue normalization has been removed from the on-screen menu. This feature has been defaulted to always be turned "on" as part of a requirement from Dolby Laboratories. This is different from other Dolby dynamic range options that you may have seen on other Dolby Digital DVD players or AV receivers.
