No, you can not use other MP3 players in ipod devices or hookups. I just found out that only Ipods work in Ipod devices even though they have the same connector. Unlike other connectors these are not compatible even though you can plug other MP3 players into these ports. I recently specifically asked about this at the local Best Buy and was told they would work but upon buying a Sansa MP3 player I found out it does not work with the Ipod dock I have. This was one reason I bought this MP3 player so this was rather diappointing but more so is the fact that the sales person in Best Buy did not know these connectors are not campatible. So if you want an MP3 player you can use with the hook up in your car you will need to get an Ipod.

Hi,
Most "ports" for cars are not the generic ipod accessory port. Usually it is just a plug with the same fit as a normal 3.5mm headphone jack that will plug from any headphone jack on any mp3 player into it. I don't see why or have ever heard of a car company tayloring a stereo in a car to use only ipods.
Then again if this is the case you can buy an FM transmitter, really cheaply, probably around 10-15 dollars and they can plug into any player also through the headphone jack. Then you just tune the car radio to the station you are palying on.
Good luck!
